There are few better meals than a piece of great quality fish, simply grilled or smoked. The emphasis of this fun, relaxed, hands-on class is on learning to choose the best fish, and to bring out its best using the barbecue.Grill Master José will teach you his meticulous low and slow process for mouth-watering dishes. Starting from the market, Jose' will bring you to the fish and fruit and vegetable vendor stalls; there, you will be shown and explained what ingredients we will shop. You will then drive to the 'Gato Preto de Silves', a typical Algarve-style Quinta nestled in the beautiful Silves countryside, where Gloria will await you with a fresh aperitif to start the cooking class together. The selection of fish, the temperature each fish needs, and the cooking time for a perfect barbecue ensure that the fish retains its flavor, losing only the fat it needs at the right temperature of the embers. In the meantime, Gloria will show you how to prepare a nice olives pate', the 'salada algarvia', picking tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers from the vegetables garden. Finally, we will sit together under the Bougainvillea to enjoy our BBQ in a relaxed, friendly and festive atmosphere. Bring your swimwear and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the pool. There's no need to rush, we're in the Algarve!
We will meet at Portimao Municipal Fish Market. Supply of fish varies hugely, so we work with the best available on the day of the class. We always aim to cook something from all these categories: A larger fish, such as sea bass Oily fish, such as mackerel A cephalopod, like squid A “meaty” fish such as redfish ''Cantarilho''
We start with a quick snack, then light the barbecues. Whilst the barbecues come up to temperature Jose' will introduce you to the Algarvian culture of grilling fish and its special home-made sauces.

Gato Preto de Silves
Gato Preto is a traditional guesthouse surrounded by lush gardens and trees in the inland. It's located 4 km away from the center of Silves, the beautiful medieval town that was the capital of the Kingdom of Algarve in the past.
The guesthouse hosts cooking classrooms and workshops for guesthouse guests and outside guests, always only for small groups.
